Mobile County proclaims April Sexual Assault Awareness Month; survivor urges continued support

Mobile County commissioners on April 13 approved a proclamation declaring April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and commended a local crisis center and Lifelines Counseling Services for victim support and prevention work.
The proclamation recited the crisis center's 2025 activity: 401 outreach/education programs reaching 7,113 students and individuals across Mobile, Washington and Clarke counties, 395 crisis phone calls, 210 hospital calls, 133 crisis-intervention office visits, 827 follow-up victim-support calls, and other direct services and supports provided to victims and families. The proclamation said the crisis center will display materials in Government Plaza through April.
A Lifelines representative thanked the commission for the recognition and introduced volunteer Misty Lee, who identified herself as a survivor and described receiving in-hospital support after an attack at age 19 and subsequent involvement with the center as a volunteer. "I am a survivor of [violence] ... I was homeless. I became addicted to drugs and alcohol ... and I just wanna thank you all for, just being a thing and being so supportive," Misty Lee said.
Chair recognized the volunteer and thanked crisis-center staff and volunteers for their work serving victims and providing prevention education. The proclamation and the public remarks were ceremonial actions intended to raise awareness and highlight community resources; no regulatory or budgetary measures were adopted as part of the proclamation.
