Library director reports budget adjustments, staffing updates and upcoming programs

Joy Holt, the library director, reported the library’s finances, staffing updates and several upcoming programs and partnerships during the board meeting.
On finances, Holt said she reallocated some line items within the general fund to ensure the library can meet the state collection-development match. “We’ve used about 57% of our budget,” she said, and added that she increased software-maintenance funding to avoid shortfalls later in the fiscal year.
Holt gave a staffing update: the administrative clerk position was filled internally by a long-time shelver, Judy Roberts, and the senior library assistant position is tentatively filled pending completion of paperwork. She said the hires will open shelving vacancies that have already been posted and that the library is “dangerously close to being fully staffed.”
Holt reviewed program highlights: Catherine Cunningham of the Sierra Nevada Forums said the organization will present a screening of the documentary The Librarians on April 22 (doors 5 p.m.; program 5:30 p.m.) at the Brewery Art Center, and Holt noted an Equinox telescope presentation with WNC and the revival of the Ex Libris newsletter for the library’s 60th anniversary.
Holt also clarified programming details: a dog-training workshop is instructional for owners only (no animals brought into the library); Tech Busters remains a drop-in help hour, and the proposed new systems-manager position would deliver more robust, scheduled technology and workforce classes.
On strategic planning, Holt said more than 300 public surveys were returned to inform a draft plan and that a technical report will accompany the strategic plan; trustees asked whether raw survey responses would be made available and Holt said the plan and technical report will present findings though not individual raw surveys.
Holt closed by reporting a recent unveiling of the Phil and Phyllis Patton community room and plaque (about 38 attendees) and confirmed a water-bottle filling station in the building. The board had no further business and adjourned.
