Carson City trustees approve 2026–27 academic calendar with five professional learning days and weekly early-release schedule

The Carson City School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously March 10 to adopt draft G of the 2026–27 academic calendar, a package that includes five full professional learning (PL) days, a weekly early-release day (ERD) model and an end-of-year date of June 3.
Chief Academic Officer Brandon Bringhurst told trustees the district looked at two calendar options and extensive stakeholder input before recommending no change to daily elementary minutes, adding weekly PLC time and five district PL days to meet new and required training. "Our recommendation is that we don't change the duration of the day," Bringhurst said during his presentation, and further recommended a weekly ERD to guarantee consistent PLC time across sites.
The board’s deliberations focused on trade-offs between instructional time, teacher preparation, athletics and family childcare. Trustees raised how the district will measure the ERD and PLCs’ effectiveness; Bringhurst said the district will use teacher perceptions, MAP and SBAC trends and on-site monitoring as indicators. "I think a better measure is what are our teacher perceptions of the effectiveness of those times," he said.
Public testimony was mixed: several educators and building leaders urged the board to approve the five PL days to provide multi-hour training needed for curriculum rollouts and the science-of-reading requirement, while some teachers and parents warned that additional noninstructional days could increase short-week absenteeism. Teacher Lindsey Bly told the board she favored option F and voiced concern that "we are gonna have a lot more absenteeism" if students see many short weeks in February. School principals and union leaders, including Carrie Pryor and Brian Wallace, argued longer PL days allow deep work that cannot be squeezed into repeated short sessions.
After a period of motion attempts and discussion, Trustee Clapham moved to approve draft G; Trustee Ramirez seconded. The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.
The board directed staff to report back on implementation and monitoring plans — including teacher surveys and progress measures — as the district executes the calendar next year. The calendar adoption is final; trustees were briefed that a tentative budget discussion will follow in April and a final budget action in May, if changes to staffing or costs are required.
