Library director: fuel costs rose sharply; contingency and year-end transfers should cover overages

During the staff report, Trustee (speaker S5) asked whether power costs had risen significantly and later another trustee raised an alarm about vehicle fuel and oil charges. "So it's up 279%?" asked a trustee. Director Joy Holt acknowledged higher fuel-related charges and said the library has contingency funds and that finance typically performs budget transfers at year end to cover such shortfalls. "We've gone over because of the cost of fuel being higher," Holt said, adding that she will reach out to finance to confirm particulars and whether any billing errors (for example, being charged for another department's vehicle use) occurred.
Holt emphasized that while fuel and power have increased citywide, the library's overall budget remains on track with six months left in the fiscal year. She said the finance department can reallocate or augment line items at budget build time and that the library will generally have sufficient funds to cover current overages.
Trustees requested follow-up to verify whether Fleet charges or internal accounting explain the spike. Holt said she would contact finance and report back.
