Commission recommends approval to abandon portions of East 6th Street and alley for state office/parking project

The Carson City Planning Commission recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve a request from US Geomatics to abandon portions of East 6th Street, South Fall Street and a 10-foot alley to facilitate a state office building, maintenance facility and parking garage.
Heather Farris, planning manager, told commissioners the abandonment areas total approximately 28,496 square feet and are highlighted in staff materials. She said staff was able to make the seven required findings for the abandonment and recommended approval subject to four conditions in the staff report. Development engineering (Steven Pote) confirmed that water and sewer, and likely some dry utilities, are present and that relocation design is already underway; he said the project applicant (the state) will pay for required relocations.
The applicant’s representative (Dirk Horne) was present and agreed to staff conditions. Commissioner DeChristopher moved to recommend approval to the Board of Supervisors based on staff findings and conditions; the motion passed on voice vote.
Why it matters: the abandonment is a procedural but necessary step in permitting the state’s planned office and parking project; utility relocation and recording of easements will follow if the Board approves the recommendation.
