Superintendent outlines program changes: music enrichment reclassified; student reps introduced

The superintendent told the board the district can meet state music standards with current staff but cannot maintain the traditional, above-and-beyond instrumental offerings. To preserve those opportunities, the superintendent recommended categorizing instrumental instruction as enrichment and funding it from enterprise/tuition accounts rather than the general budget. "So, since this type of music instruction is not ... required, we will categorize it now as this enrichment," the superintendent said, adding that the district believes this is an appropriate use of tuition-derived enterprise funds.
On gifted and talented services, the district described a staffing shift: an existing school specialist has assumed oversight responsibilities and the district will identify potential students through nominations and testing twice annually, in January and May.
The meeting also included formal introduction of student representatives. One student, Joe Sheehan, described his involvement in student council and volunteer work and said serving as a student representative offers insight into district governance.
What happens next: staff will post updated program information on the district website and proceed with the recommended part-time hire and the revised identification schedule; parents will be updated during conference times and via school-based teams.
