St. Peter library to get $69,500 grant from Schmidt Foundation; city also accepts $12,000 Lions donation and $10,000 Carnegie award

The St. Peter City Council approved multiple donations and grants that will benefit the public library and park improvements.
John, who leads the city’s recreation and library services, told the council the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation awarded the library a $69,500 grant to support the library’s collection and materials: "They have continued to show support year in and year out for our library," John said. The council approved a resolution accepting the funds.
The council also approved a $12,000 donation from the Saint Peter Lions Club tied to the purchase of a lion water fountain and additional funds earmarked for Gorman Park Phase 2. A council member who said they were a Lions Club member indicated they would abstain from voting on that item to avoid a perceived conflict; the resolution was approved.
John additionally reported the library received a $10,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation, with no specific direction attached; staff are evaluating whether to apply those funds to capital improvements rather than the collection.
Council members thanked the donors and recognized that the grants and donations support ongoing library services and park amenities for the community.
