West Jefferson aldermen approve routine measures, paving and street actions; departments report monthly activity

The Town of West Jefferson Board of Aldermen conducted routine business and received department reports at its July 7 regular meeting.
On procedural items the board approved the meeting agenda and the prior minutes by unanimous votes. The board approved a fire contract addendum (motion by Alderman Calvin Green, second Alderman Rusty Barr), allowed the West Jefferson Business Association to purchase and install white lights on tree trunks only (motion by Alderman Rusty Barr), approved a proposed street closing, and approved the Order to Collect Taxes — each action recorded as 5-0 in the minutes.
Town Manager Brantley Price briefed the board on FEMA projects and town finances: FEMA-authorized repairs to North Church Avenue are cleared to proceed and category A and B damages were approved with funding for category B; sewer line extensions on Freedom and Independence should finish in a few weeks before work shifts to Ridge Avenue; wastewater treatment plant upgrades are scheduled to begin in September. Price said taxes collected to date total 97.6% of the levy and sales tax receipts are up 7% from the prior year (5.6% year-to-date). He also noted that Our State magazine will feature a 22-page pictorial of West Jefferson and that candidate registration for alderman opened July 7 with a July 18 filing deadline. The minutes record that the ABC store provided an additional $50,000 beyond the budgeted $250,000 for a total of $300,000 for fiscal year 2024–2025.
Department reports: Police Chief Brad Jordan reported 261 calls for the month, including four motor-vehicle crashes, 11 larcenies, two drug cases, four DWIs, three fraud cases and other calls. Wastewater Superintendent Brandon Patrick reported 3.5 inches of rain for the month, a repaired flange at the Beaver Creek pump station (work assisted by maintenance staff and Carolina Grading) and that both filters are producing about 60,000 gallons per day. Fire Captain Josh Walters reported 57 calls in the month and that the department has completed roughly half of preplans and is still collecting quotes for a new truck.
The board concluded with aldermen remarks and adjourned the meeting by a 5-0 vote.
