Summary
Middle school students described visits to Arlington, the Holocaust Museum and other D.C. sites; the board also recognized wrestling state qualifiers and heard a public comment from the YMCA reporting program participation and thanking district transportation staff.
Middle school students and chaperones presented highlights from an eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., and the board recognized high school wrestling accomplishments at its April 13 meeting.
Erin, a Lakeshore chaperone, described the trip as an "incredible honor," noting that the middle school is consistently selected to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during a changing of the guard ceremony. Student Amelia Plummer said the group toured the Capitol and memorials and "in total, we walked 20,000 steps that day." Another student who visited the Holocaust Museum said the trip complemented in-class studies and called meeting a survivor a "super interesting" experience.
The board then heard from the high school wrestling coach, who celebrated team academic all-state recognition, multiple regional qualifiers and state placers. The coach singled out individual achievements, including a three-time all-state wrestler and athletes committed to West Point.
In public comment, Ryan Kitron, speaking on behalf of the YMCA Greater Michiana, thanked the district for partnership on before-and-after school care (Y Club), Schools Out programming and summer camp. He provided participation figures — up to 70 participants for Y Club, 64 for Schools Out programs during the year and roughly 164 summer campers last season, about 50–60 of whom were Lakeshore students — and thanked Transportation staff for training and bus support.
Board members and staff thanked students, coaches and community partners for their work and closed the presentations portion of the meeting before moving into business items.
