District pursues grants and temporary classrooms while planning long-term capacity fixes

Staff reported an RFP for leased space is due June 13 and that architects are preparing order-of-magnitude budgets for temporary classroom units (TCUs, commonly called trailers). "We're looking at that to be part of this proposal," staff said, noting siting challenges such as electrical capacity, underground water and sewer and HVAC needs.
On capital projects and grants, staff said the district will submit applications for two projects: an ADA accessibility upgrade including an elevator and chairlift with a rough estimate of about $1,700,000 and an interior renovation of Preakness School’s older section estimated at roughly $10,500,000. Staff said the ADA project assumes about 40% grant funding and would leave about $700,000 in local match requirements.
The board asked that architects and staff return with clearer budgets and feasibility recommendations for TCUs and leased-space options. Staff also said ongoing exterior envelope work (bridal grant) and other restoration projects will continue over the summer.
No grant awards were announced at the meeting; staff said applications will be submitted to the Department of Education and SDA in the coming days.
