Summary
The committee reviewed and supported a $500,000 GeoBond supplemental appropriation for planning and initial design work to improve the Poolesville highway depot, citing decades‑long facility deterioration and staff safety concerns.
The Transportation and Environment Committee on April 13 supported a $500,000 GeoBond supplemental appropriation to create and fund planning, design and initial construction for improvements at the Poolesville MCDOT highway depot, including water and sewer installation, portable buildings for sleeping and administrative space, locker rooms and a fire suppression system.
Gregory Boykin (deputy director and COO, Department of General Services) told the committee there was no single precipitating incident for the request; rather, the facility has experienced continual deterioration over decades and the improvements are intended to provide safer, healthier working conditions for staff. "There was not a specific incident. It was a continual deterioration of the facility over time," Boykin said.
Committee members noted the site's long history (the original building dates to 1925) and supported the supplemental appropriation by unanimous consent; staff said the amendment draws on available GO bond set‑asides and will be reflected in the CIP and supplemental-appropriation materials provided to full council.
