Committee backs $30,000 county match to unlock Vision Zero federal grant

The Transportation and Environment Committee on April 13 endorsed a $30,000 county match that would leverage federal Safe Streets for All grant funds to update Montgomery County’s Vision Zero (Vision 0) action plan. Wade Holland (Vision 0 coordinator) told the committee the total project is estimated at about $300,000 and that the county’s $30,000 contribution would unlock roughly $240,000 in federal reimbursement, enabling more in‑person outreach and a mid‑cycle update of the action plan.

Holland said the county applied for the grant in 2024 and has a signed grant agreement with the federal government. He outlined plans for deeper community outreach, data analysis and convening work groups with the departments involved in Vision Zero implementation. Holland noted traffic‑safety concerns year to date: "Montgomery County Police have investigated as of this weekend, 13 fatal collisions," and added that three of the recent investigations involved pedestrians and four involved motorcycles.

Committee members supported the match and asked clarifying questions about the timing and procurement process; staff said they expect to begin procurement in late summer so work groups and outreach can start in the fall with a full update completed in roughly a year if funding is available. The committee’s support will be reflected in the reconciliation materials submitted for full council consideration.
