Newport board approves two middle-school hires, expels four students and accepts draft 2026–27 calendar

The Newport Board of School Directors on Jan. 13 approved two recommended personnel hires, approved expulsions for four students and accepted a draft 2026–27 academic calendar for further refinement.
On a combined motion (moved by Pat Dorman and seconded by Autumn Gehr-Shope), the board approved hiring Gwendolyn Soult as a middle-school mathematics teacher (beginning Jan. 14, 2026, at Master’s Step 2) and Alexis Dorbert as a middle-school special education teacher (Bachelor’s +24, Step 13, beginning upon release from her current employer). The motion passed by roll call (8 ayes, 0 nays, 1 absent).
Separately, the board approved the administration’s recommendation to expel four students with the following identifications and date ranges: Student ID# 30104 (Dec. 10, 2025–June 5, 2026); Student ID# 27163 (Jan. 16, 2026–Jan. 16, 2027); Student ID# 31120 (Jan. 9, 2026–Mar. 23, 2026); and Student ID# 30084 (Jan. 15, 2026–June 5, 2026). The board also approved a draft version of the 2026–27 academic calendar; Superintendent Ryan Neuhard said the draft will be revised and returned for final approval by June.
All personnel and discipline actions were carried by roll call vote. The board adjourned at 7:06 PM.
