Elko County adopts 2024 International Building Code with Northern Nevada amendments

"As long as we're on the same code addition as the city of Elko, then it makes their lives easier," said Curtis (county staff), summarizing the local-builders' input and the rationale for harmonization. Staff noted the Northern Nevada amendments are intended to preserve locally important exceptions and to reduce the administrative burden on builders who work in both the city and county.
Commission discussion focused on whether new fire-suppression provisions would raise building costs. Staff said the 2024 edition retains a threshold for residential fire suppression at 5,000 square feet, but the Northern Nevada amendments and existing county provisions include options such as firewalling to avoid automatic sprinkler triggers in typical smaller residences.
A motion to adopt the resolution was made and seconded; the board approved the resolution with one commissioner recorded as a nay. The resolution lists an effective date and implements the Northern Nevada amendments as the county's official update to the building code.
Staff offered to make the adopted amendments available on the county website and to provide printed guidance to local builders about the changes and relevant effective dates.
