Sayreville council members and residents told the borough at an April 2026 meeting they want stronger local controls on electric bikes and scooters after reports of children riding unsafely.
A council member responsible for public works described a recent incident in which a boy under 10 was riding an electric bike without a properly fastened helmet and said the borough will pursue regulatory changes for parks. "I have had it with these things running around town," the council member said, urging parents to supervise and calling for enforcement.
Borough officials said state law will impose stricter licensing and registration requirements effective this summer, and the borough attorney noted municipalities do not have authority to regulate these vehicles on roadways but can adopt rules governing parks and other public property. The administration indicated it would present an amendment at a future meeting to bar e-bikes and e-scooters from parks and pedestrian walkways, citing concerns about safety and conflicts with investments in pedestrian infrastructure.
Chiefs and police staff sent information about the new state rules during the meeting; borough administration said it intends to pursue an amendment to its local ordinances to restrict use in parks and to coordinate enforcement guidance with the police department.
The council asked staff to prepare ordinance language and said the item would come back for consideration at a future meeting.
