Summary
Student leaders from Terre Haute South and Terre Haute North described club-led fundraisers for Riley Children’s Hospital, with South reporting a school-record $31,000 and North citing $83,000 for last year and $238,000 raised over seven years.
Student leaders from Terre Haute South and Terre Haute North high schools presented a joint spotlight to the Vigo County School Corp board, describing multi-event fundraising efforts for Riley Children’s Hospital and the community partnerships that helped swell donations.
A Terre Haute South student leader said the school’s March Dance Marathon drew a strong turnout and combined year-long events — including a new glow run — to raise slightly more than $31,000, a school record. The speaker said the club made a point this year of inviting students from other corporations, naming Northview and West Vigo among those who attended, to broaden participation and increase giving.
A Terre Haute North representative told the board North’s program now involves both a dedicated Dance Marathon club and Interact, reporting more than 200 members and a series of sports and social fundraising events (volleyball, pickleball, basketball tournaments, trivia and bingo nights). The North rep said their program raised $83,000 last year and that the two schools together have raised more than $238,000 over seven years.
Janet Brosmer, the district’s curriculum coordinator, and board members praised the students’ work and encouraged continued outreach. Board members publicly thanked the students for bringing money to the table and for inviting other schools to participate.
The North Dance Marathon was announced as rescheduled for April 17 at 7 p.m.; students asked the board to consider continuing to highlight student philanthropy at future meetings and to accept donations at school events.
Why it matters: The student-led efforts combine fundraising, community engagement and direct family support through Riley relations programs that pair students with Riley families. The presentations emphasized both financial totals and the district’s growing focus on student civic engagement.
What’s next: Students said they will continue year-round fundraising events and return to report results and progress to the board.
