Committee forwards nomination of Durand Ignacio to Hawaii County Fire Commission

Chair Kaguada opened the committee session and members considered Communication 691, the mayor’s nomination of Durand Ignacio to the Hawaii County Fire Commission. Mike Alameda, executive assistant to Mayor Kimo Alameda, introduced Ignacio and outlined his background: military service in the U.S. Air Force, more than 25 years with the Hawaii Police Department and 14 years in retirement as a part-time cattle rancher in Hamakua.

"I am here on behalf of mayor Kimo Alameda," Mike Alameda said, introducing the nominee and noting Ignacio’s local roots in Laupahoehoe and experience in public safety. Ignacio, who would serve if confirmed through Dec. 31, 2030, told the committee he was grateful for the opportunity. "I just wanted to say mahalo to the council, for your consideration in this great opportunity for me," he said.

Councilmembers spoke in support. Heather L. Kimball praised Ignacio’s public-service background and said his experience would contribute to the commission as it undertakes hiring the next fire chief. Councilmember Inaba moved to close the file on Communication 691 and forward the nomination with a favorable recommendation; Councilmember Houstis seconded the motion.

The committee voted to close the file and forward the nomination to the full council with a favorable recommendation. The committee record as read in the session identified the motion and favorable recommendation; the nominee’s term expiration date was provided in the nomination materials as Dec. 31, 2030.

The nomination will be considered by the full Hawaii County Council at a later date.
