Oscoda County chair, clerk and administrator tasked to resolve workers' compensation renewal after overlapping policies

Commissioner Charles E. Varner Jr. told the board Feb. 11 that a worker's compensation policy renewal had been processed outside the board’s normal review and that overlapping coverage resulted. The board authorized Varner, County Clerk Libby Marsh and County Administrator Michelle Knepp to continue handling the matter and to report back at the next scheduled meeting.
Varner said the county uses Peterson McGregor as its agent and that a newly implemented policy backdated to Jan. 1, 2025 produced approximately $40,000 in annual savings compared with the county’s previous carrier. He said the prior carrier’s renewal had not been brought before the board and payment had been issued to the former carrier on Jan. 8, 2025, creating the overlap.
Varner told commissioners he does not generally act between meetings unless there is urgency and recommended that future policy renewals come before the board rather than be renewed automatically. The board approved a motion directing Varner, Marsh and Knepp to continue working on the workers' compensation policy until the matter is resolved and to present findings at the next meeting (motion 2025-061). The vote was unanimous.
At the meeting the board did not adopt a separate long-term policy governing renewals; commissioners asked for the matter to be brought forward for full board consideration.
