Oscoda County temporarily reappoints Veterans Affairs board after terms found expired under PA 192

Oscoda County’s Board of Commissioners temporarily reappointed seven Veterans Affairs board members Feb. 25 after County Administrator Michelle Knepp reported the board’s terms had lapsed in violation of Public Act 192.
Knepp said PA 192 requires board members be appointed by the Board of Commissioners and that terms be staggered so no more than two terms expire at the same time; she recommended temporary appointments so the board could continue day-to-day work while the county advertises for candidates. The board approved a motion to temporarily appoint Richard Landry, Al Chaney, Roger Stitt, Frank Beek, Tim Whiting, Dennis Cooper and Bob Whittaker through March 31, 2025 (motion 2025-072) and authorized advertising for Veterans Affairs board positions with a March 17, 2025 deadline (motion 2025-073).
Veterans Affairs board member Frank Beek spoke in support of the board and thanked the commissioners for their assistance: "I feel that we have a bright future as a Veterans Affairs board." County administration intends to return to the board in March with formal appointments and a proposal to stagger terms to comply with PA 192.
