Oscoda County board approves switch of EMS billing vendor after reported revenue decline

The Oscoda County Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 11 to discontinue use of EMS/MC for ambulance billing and to authorize a contract with MI Financial Services, a local company based in Ossineke, after the county's EMS director reported a sharp decline in revenues following the acquisition of the county's prior vendor.
Mr. Robert Stankiewicz, EMS director, said AccuMed had worked with the county for six years until it was bought by EMS/MC on Nov. 1, 2024. Since the acquisition, Stankiewicz said billing service has deteriorated, citing a “lack of communications” and a “substantial reduction in revenue.” He told the board that, as of January 2025, the county was down by "approximately $41,000.00" compared with January 2024 and that coding discrepancies had left claims rejected or pending.
Stankiewicz asked the board to terminate services with EMS/MC and to authorize a relationship with MI Financial Services. He said MI Financial Services added a contractual performance clause to be evaluated every 90 days and that the vendor is willing to assist with training if the county later brings billing in-house. He also said there is a 90-day wind-down period for EMS/MC to allow processing of outstanding claims and that MI Financial Services would help recoup unpaid amounts if necessary. Stankiewicz noted an initial start-up fee of $2,000 for MI Financial Services and said the effective date for the transition might be moved to March 1, 2025.
Commissioner Tom McCauley thanked Stankiewicz for monitoring the situation and the board approved the motion to discontinue EMS/MC and to enter into an agreement with MI Financial Services effective Feb. 11, 2025. Roll-call voting was unanimous.
The board did not at the meeting provide a line-item estimate of net savings or a contract term; the EMS director said MI Financial Services would be monitored on a 90-day performance schedule.
