Board declines state tax-levy incentive, approves routine finance items with limited abstentions
Summary
Business administrator explained the NJDOE tax-levy incentive would have required a roughly $660,000 levy increase to secure about $31,000 in state aid; the board rejected pursuing that option and approved routine finance and contract items, with one abstention on a reimbursement.

The Egg Harbor Township Board of Education heard a finance update and approved a slate of finance and operations items after district staff recommended not pursuing a state tax-levy incentive.
Business administrator Mister Smith explained the New Jersey Department of Education's tax-levy incentive program and the district's analysis: the maximum additional levy the district could have raised was roughly $660,000, which would have generated about $31,000 in state aid. "So as a district, we looked, we didn't think that was reasonable," Smith said, explaining that the incentive would have required an estimated 0.78 percentage-point increase in the levy for a small return in state aid.
Following that explanation, the board voted by roll call to approve finance item 8.2 and then approved a batch motion covering items 8.3 through 8.25. During the 8.3—25 batch, board member Mister Byers announced an abstention on item R-299, which appeared to be his own reimbursement; otherwise the items passed as recorded. The minutes and roll-call record show affirmative votes from the board members present on the approved items.
Why it matters: the board's decision not to pursue the NJDOE tax-levy incentive reflects a local calculation that the required levy increase did not justify the small state-aid return, a choice that affects local taxpayers and the district's 2025-26 budget planning.
Next steps: finance committee items and the preliminary 2025-26 budget work will continue in committee; the business office reported it is preparing the 2025-26 budget and will discuss potential appropriations and cost-saving areas at upcoming meetings.
