Gilroy Unified hears facilities master‑plan update and debates whether to extend community survey ahead of proposed bond

Consultants for Gilroy Unified on Monday updated the board on a districtwide facilities master plan and presented the findings of a recent community survey, while trustees weighed whether to extend outreach at the risk of missing bond‑related timing.

The presentation, led by consultant Joe Fila, summarized work started five to six months ago to update the district’s 2016 facilities plan so it meets new state funding criteria created by Proposition 2. Fila said the plan must include a detailed inventory, capital planning budgets, a newly required deferred‑maintenance plan and enrollment projections so the district can pursue state apportionments in addition to local bond funding.

Why it matters: meeting the state’s Prop 2 requirements could unlock billions in school‑facility funding, but the district also faces a tight timetable if it wants to place a bond measure next year. That created a tradeoff at the board table between deeper community outreach and staying on the bond schedule.
