District reports ELA gains, lower absenteeism in LCAP midyear update

"Distance from standard tells us how far on average our students are at meeting the state's proficiency benchmark," McLaren said, adding that Hispanic English learners and students with disabilities showed notable growth. She also reported that chronic absenteeism decreased districtwide and that suspensions remain low at 1.2 percent.
The presentation identified mathematics as an area that has "flatlined" compared with the baseline and called for more targeted instruction for long-term English learners. McLaren outlined midyear expenditures including small-group instruction, additional nurses and health assistants, classroom furniture upgrades and differentiated professional development for teachers.
McLaren highlighted outreach and support activities: 95 English learner classes and 36 family workshops provided this year; counselors have responded to over 800 student requests and more than 300 teacher referrals; and the district has met with student focus groups across all 14 schools to gather input for the LCAP.
Board members praised the engagement work and asked for continued outreach. Trustee Seegrest asked for clarification on the acronym; McLaren responded that LCAP stands for "Local Control and Accountability Plan" and described plans to expand student and parent input through ELAC and focus-group meetings.
Next steps, McLaren said, include continuing targeted interventions for long-term English learners and using the community feedback to refine the second-half implementation of the three-year plan. No vote was required for the informational update.
