The Nantucket Planning Board agreed April 13 to permit seasonal outdoor training activity at the Wharton Training Center subject to specific safety and circulation measures.
Operator Andrei Dobrzynski described an outdoor weight-and-training area currently covered by a tent and used in warm months; staff noted the tent itself requires separate advertising and a permit. The board asked the applicant to refile the tent application (for the May meeting) and to supply an updated site plan that shows crosswalks, an additional speed bump and protective measures (temporary barriers or removable bollards) to separate slow-moving vehicle circulation from exercise stations.
Paul Santos, the applicant's surveyor, told the board that the site is in a commercial cluster with limited adjacent residences and that no formal complaints had been logged during the gym's first year of operation. He said the operator would mark a one-way traffic flow, add signage, and meet staff expectations for a safe layout. The board requested a plan that also locates exercise equipment and any hanging boxing bags so staff can verify pedestrian clearance.
The board did not issue a final tent permit the same night because a tent-duration permit must be separately advertised. Members agreed they were supportive in principle but wanted the protective measures and a short-season trial with a follow-up report after the first season.
The board asked staff to accept the applicant's tent re-application for the May 11 meeting and attached conditions that require the operator to implement traffic controls, install protective barriers acceptable to staff and present a year-end report for public review.
