Kewanee council approves consent items, leases BD Pyxis tracking system for fire department; resident raises flooding concern

The Kewanee City Council approved routine business and several resolutions and contracts during its June 23 meeting, voting 4-0 on multiple items.
On the consent agenda the council approved minutes from June 9 and accepted staff reports and a Chamber of Commerce fireworks permit. Council also approved payroll for the period ending June 14 totaling $261,081.38 and bills of $252,236.37.
Council approved Bill 25-62, a resolution authorizing the city manager, fire chief and city clerk to execute a five-year lease with BD Pyxis for hardware and software to secure and track medications and controlled supplies used on EMS calls. Fire Chief Welgat said the system provides individual employee codes and biometrics to enhance security, logs quantities and expiration dates, and can facilitate swapping near-expiration medications with the hospital to avoid waste and reduce replacement costs.
Council also approved Bill 25-61, a resolution supporting the Illinois America250 commemoration.
During public comment, Sara Renfro of 411 S. Vine raised concerns about localized flooding after heavy rains and suggested clogged storm drains; she provided photos to the council. City Manager Gary Bradley said staff would consult Public Works, develop a plan and provide additional information to address the issue.
Mayor Moore reported retail sales were up about 15% compared with the first quarter of the previous year, urged residents to take heat precautions and look out for neighbors, and noted that the child involved in a Tenney & Church traffic accident is recovering and recently participated in a game with the Kewanee A's. City Hall and the Transfer Station will be closed July 4 with no change to trash or recycling schedules. The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
