Trustees discussed a proposal for operating funds to support Census 2020 volunteers and seed money that had been placed on the Sept. 3 agenda but not previously discussed. Concerns were raised about the use of public funds for volunteer activities and the need for an expense policy. Village Attorney Michael Jurusik advised that a formal budget be drafted that complies with the village’s expense policy.
Trustee I. Brandon moved, using Attorney Jurusik’s suggested wording, that the committee work with village finance staff to draft a budget for the expenditure of business expenses for the 2020 Census Committee. Trustee Booker seconded the motion, which passed by voice vote. The motion does not itself appropriate funds; it directs committee and finance staff to prepare a budget proposal for future board consideration.
Next steps: staff and the Census committee will prepare a budget proposal outlining seed money needs and permissible expenditures to return to the board for approval.
