At its Feb. 4 meeting, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners adopted an amendment to the county’s 2027 federal legislative agenda adding formal opposition to federal preemption that would limit counties’ roles in telecommunications infrastructure decisions.
County communications specifically cited the American Broadband Deployment Act of 2025 (H.R. 2289) as an example of legislation the commission would oppose if it removed or preempted local decision-making authority on siting and related infrastructure matters.
The amendment reflects the commission’s policy preference to preserve local regulatory and permitting authority over telecommunications projects. County materials did not include the recorded vote tally or debate text in the public recap.
The amendment will be incorporated into the county’s federal legislative priorities and shared with federal legislative contacts as part of advocacy work on behalf of the county.
