Piscataway board hears safety report, approves routine committee motions and advances superintendent search

The presenter said substance‑abuse incidents decreased from 23 to 13 and described ongoing counseling and prevention work including cyberbullying and social‑media presentations.
Board members heard fiscal and facilities updates. Dr. Tom Connors reviewed that the 2024–25 budget is trending toward a lower fund balance and that capital‑reserve and maintenance‑reserve deposit resolutions remain on the agenda at reduced amounts. He listed active and planned facility projects — including woodshop dust‑collection closeout, interior alterations and demolition work at Piscataway High School, completion work on the nurse’s office and acoustical upgrades in the high‑school gym — and said work on the administration building was scheduled to start June 18.
Procurement items on the agenda included a proposed replacement copier lease (replace 62 copiers with 68 and implement a print‑management system), food‑service equipment bids with a recommended award to Denver Equipment Company, and continuing remediation monitoring for a DEP‑designated site on Ethel Road.
The board approved multiple grouped motions by roll call. Nancy Salgado Cowan moved that the listed consent items (identified as items a–h in the meeting materials) be approved "as presented," the motion was seconded and the roll call recorded affirmative votes and a motion outcome of "Motion's carried." A subsequent set of curriculum, pupil‑services and administrative motions were likewise seconded and carried; one abstention was recorded on a specific administrative item (item e).
The board also received an update on the superintendent search from the search‑committee chair. The chair reported that 39 applicants began the process, 36 completed applications, two applicants withdrew and two did not complete — leaving 33 candidates (including applicants from New Jersey and out of state). The committee completed a first round of interviews and said it would report further in July.
