Newark Unified elects officers, sets 2025 meeting calendar and assigns committees

At its annual organization meeting the Newark Unified School District Board of Education elected officers, approved a proposed meeting calendar for 2025–26 and assigned trustees to standing committees.

Vice President Jones was nominated to serve as board president; the nomination was seconded and approved by roll call (6 ayes). Member Thomas was subsequently nominated and approved as vice president in a separate roll‑call vote (6 ayes). The board also voted to appoint the superintendent to serve as secretary to the governing board (motion passed, 6 ayes).

On scheduling, board leadership proposed shifting to one regular board meeting each month (first week) and a study session in the third week to allow deeper discussion of key topics; June would include two regular meetings to accommodate budget and LCAP public hearings. Staff said dates will be published and explained timing constraints (state May revise, budget and LCAP deadlines) that inform June hearings.

The board discussed committee composition and terms (audit committee, Citizens Bond Oversight Committee, Newark liaison, LCAP advisory, teacher induction advisory council, Mission Valley ROP governing council, SELPA). Member Thomas and Member Anguiano were nominated and confirmed for the audit committee with Member Block named as alternate. The board also appointed members and alternates to the CBOC, city‑liaison committee, LCAP advisory committee, teacher induction council, MVROP and SELPA as recorded by roll call; each motion carried.

Routine consent items passed later in the meeting, including the personnel report and a midyear signature‑card revision.
