Summary
A 17-member strategic plan executive (Spec) committee recommended the school board move forward with Boundary Scenario 2 to better balance enrollment, establish feeder patterns and improve building utilization; the board heard the update and will consider a vote on April 27.
David Tominski, a board member, said the Cedar Rapids Comm School District heard an update from the district’s strategic plan executive (Spec) committee recommending the board advance Boundary Scenario Number 2.
Tominski said the Spec committee — which included staff and community members and counted Scott Krzyzewski as the board representative — reached a unanimous recommendation. “They are recommending that we continue to move forward with boundary scenario number 2,” Tominski said, adding that “there was no pushback” among the 17 committee members.
The committee framed Scenario 2 as a way to better balance enrollment across schools, create a consistent feeder pattern and achieve more consistent building utilization. Tominski also summarized concerns raised by community members and board members about geographic proximity for families, transportation implications, permitting and the supports families will need during any transition; he said those issues were addressed during the committee’s presentation.
The board took no formal action at the meeting. Tominski said the plan is expected to come before the board for a vote at the district’s next scheduled meeting on April 27.
What happens next: the board will receive the committee’s recommendation in full at an upcoming meeting and can accept, amend or reject the boundary scenario; Tominski encouraged interested residents to review the Spec committee materials and the recorded presentation before the April 27 meeting.
