Council authorizes arc-flash safety assessment contract to improve electrical worker safety

The Town Council unanimously approved a services agreement with Burns & McDonnell Engineering Co., Inc., to conduct an arc‑flash safety assessment of the town’s major electrical equipment.
Water Director Mark Marlowe said the assessment will evaluate roughly 1,468 major electrical items (motor control centers, switchgear and similar equipment), produce single-line diagrams for older facilities that lack them, calculate safe approach distances, and specify required personal protective equipment. Marlowe said the work aligns with National Fire Protection Association guidance and will improve workplace safety for employees and contractors who perform electrical maintenance. He said the town solicited proposals and selected Burns & McDonnell on price and capacity; staff requested a 5% contingency for likely scope additions and will present a first-quarter budget amendment to cover the contract because it was not in the adopted budget.
Council authorized the contract and the contingency; staff said work will begin immediately with the aim of completing assessments before year-end.
