Anita Edmonson used the Feb. 3 public comment period to announce she is running in the June 2 special election to fill the Poway City Council District 2 vacancy.
Edmonson said she previously served on the council after an appointment in July 2023, cited independent decision‑making (noting a lone 'no' vote on a Lifetime Fitness Center proposal), and said she kept a prior pledge not to run in November 2024 when her term ended. She told the council, "When I'm elected, I will call upon my proven experience, leadership, and independent decision making to represent residents and Poway values on city council once again," and provided campaign contact information (anitapoway.com, anita@anitapoway.com).
On consent business, the council moved to approve consent calendar items 1 and 2; Deputy Mayor Maeda seconded, and a roll call vote recorded Council Member DeHoff — Aye; Deputy Mayor Maeda — Aye; Mayor Voss — Aye. The items passed.
The council opened an advertised public hearing on a request for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP 250001) and Development Review (DR 250003) to construct a Dutch Brothers Coffee with a two‑lane drive‑through at 13740 Poway Road (inside the Lowe's Home Improvement parking lot, APN 3171306900). With no speakers on that item and with a staff recommendation to continue, the council voted to continue the hearing to its Feb. 17 regular meeting.
Council also moved to council‑initiated items for brief updates; Council Member Peter offered thanks to the city attorney for analysis that helped reduce liability related to a prior matter. The meeting adjourned to a closed session item listed on the agenda; no closed‑session details were disclosed during open session.
