Residents urge Box Elder County to protect fairgrounds amid stall-rental and fee concerns

During the public-comment period at the March 25 meeting, many long-term fairground users and exhibitors urged the Box Elder County Commission to preserve access and affordability at the county fairgrounds.

Chairman Tyler Vincent opened the public-comment period by apologizing to citizens for confusion over recent communications about long-term stall rentals and fees and said the county has no plans to close the fairgrounds. He thanked fairgrounds staff and volunteers for their work.

Speakers representing long-term renters, rodeo organizers and exhibitors described not receiving eviction notices, expressed concern that higher fees would limit access for families and local businesses, and asked for a transparent public meeting to discuss fee levels and policies. Commenters included Jenny Adams, an exhibitor who thanked the commission for clarification; Scott Warr, a long-term renter who asked about horse-walker safety; Kent Anderson, a longtime exhibitor seeking assurances about rodeo and animal exhibition operations; and others who emphasized the fairgrounds’ cultural and agricultural role.

Common requests from the public included: greater transparency in fee-setting, a public forum for discussion, continued affordable access to stalls and arenas for local exhibitors, and consideration of how fees affect volunteers and small businesses that rely on the facilities.

Commission reaction: Chairman Vincent said the Commission would work to ensure fees are appropriate and fair and offered to meet with stakeholders; he recognized fairgrounds staff and the contribution of community volunteers.

Next steps: Members of the public asked the commission to hold a dedicated public meeting on fairgrounds fees and operations; county staff noted they are reviewing fee structures and will continue stakeholder engagement.
