Mike Miller principal reports test-score gains, expanded supports and community engagement

Summary
Mike Miller School reported growth on MAPS diagnostics, expanded social-emotional supports and active PTA and community partnerships; principal Mr. Gehring cited MAPS growth percentiles, SAT team interventions and plans for PLC time in the school day.
Mr. Gehring presented a detailed update on Mike Miller School, saying the school used IXL and MAP diagnostics to drive interventions and that data show measurable growth across grades.
"If we're looking at the school as a whole, our growth is the 60th percentile," Gehring told the board, adding that overall achievement moved from roughly the low 40s into the 50s. He reported specific grade-level growth figures — for example, grade 3 showed about 70% growth — and said the data indicate instruction and targeted strategies are moving the needle.
Gehring described the school’s layered supports: student-assistant and student-needs teams (SAT/SNT), peer tutoring, a sensory room, "zones of regulation," safe spots, mixed-grade conflict managers and student leadership projects. He said these supports, allied with team planning time and expanded PLCs, help identify and address both academic and behavioral needs.
He highlighted community involvement and fundraising: a "One School, One Book" readathon, a fundraiser for the Aberdeen Humane Society and PTA events that drew more than 200 attendees. Gehring credited PTA volunteers with paying yearbook costs and supporting classrooms.
Board members asked how teachers identify individual needs. Gehring said the team starts with MAPS growth percentiles and then convenes the SAT to bring in speech, occupational and physical therapy flags when needed; parents are involved "right off the bat," he said. The board confirmed that "Mike Miller Day" will again be held May 1.
Gehring framed the work as collaborative and data driven and concluded by thanking staff for their roles in student growth.
