Whittier staff and council bid farewell to Shannon as she is appointed city manager in Cypress

City Manager McNamara announced at the Feb. 24 meeting that Shannon has been selected to serve as city manager for the neighboring city of Cypress and offered remarks thanking her for more than eight years of service to Whittier.
"She's a fantastically qualified candidate, extremely intelligent," McNamara said, adding that Shannon has been a "consummate professional" and that the city was proud of her appointment. Council members and staff rose to recognize Shannon; one councilmember noted staff members standing in the back as a visible sign of esteem and several speakers praised Shannon's leadership during a difficult prior period when she served as interim city manager.
Shannon will remain in Whittier for a couple more weeks before departing for her new position in Cypress, McNamara said. Council members said formal recognitions will follow at a future meeting. The council then proceeded to the consent calendar.
What happens next: Shannon will transition to her new role in Cypress, and Whittier staff and council said they will begin the process of identifying interim coverage and next steps for the city manager function.
