Summary
City associate engineer Jasmine Hurtado told the commission that foundation work for the Claremont Boulevard pedestrian tunnel was poured last week, tunnel walls are scheduled next, and complete-streets construction (medians and protected bike lanes) is expected to be visible in the coming months with an August completion target for the visible work.
City engineering staff updated the Traffic and Transportation Commission on progress at the Claremont Boulevard closure, reporting that foundation pours for the underground pedestrian tunnel were completed last week and that wall pours are scheduled in the coming weeks.
Associate engineer Jasmine Hurtado said crews are also installing water lines for new fire hydrants and laterals to serve a new sports bowl and that visible complete-streets work (curb/median work and protected bike-lane construction on the eastern side of Claremont Boulevard) will proceed in phases. Hurtado said the tunnel overall is expected to be completed by mid-June and the visible complete-streets portions by August.
A commissioner asked whether there had been collisions related to detours or the closure; staff said no collision reports were known to date. Staff and commissioners discussed maintaining access for colleges and ensuring signage and transitions are clear while work is underway.
Staff will return with updates as phases shift traffic and the project advances through the summer schedule.
