Summary
City staff described a cleanup amendment requested by CalPERS to add PEPRA language; the council adopted a resolution of intention, introduced an ordinance to authorize the amendment, waived further reading and scheduled adoption for the May 5 meeting.
City staff told the Poway City Council on April 7 that CalPERS asked municipalities to amend retirement contracts to incorporate language from the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) of 2013.
Jodine Thampi, the city's director of human resources and risk management, said CalPERS is working with more than 200 cities to add PEPRA language and characterized the proposed change as a "cleanup item" that does not alter current benefits. Staff recommended that the council adopt a resolution of intention and proceed with the first reading of an ordinance authorizing the contract amendment.
The council moved and seconded the recommendation, waived further reading, and scheduled adoption of the ordinance for the May 5 regular meeting. The roll call vote recorded 'Aye' from Council Member Pikes, Deputy Mayor Maeda and Mayor Voss, and the motion passed.
Next steps: the ordinance will be titled and introduced as required, and a formal adoption vote will be held May 5.
