The Northern California Regional Land Trust has finalized a conservation agreement with the owners of Kitty Hawk Orchards in North Chico that will protect 260 acres for perpetual agricultural stewardship and provide for enhanced flood retention and green infrastructure, the land trust told the Chico City Council during public comment.
"The land trust is excited to announce the finalization of a conservation agreement with the owners of Kitty Hawk Orchards in North Chico," Cynthia Perrine said, adding the agreement secures agricultural stewardship with co-benefits for biodiversity, water and stormwater management. Perrine said the Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation program uses funding from California's cap-and-trade system to protect agricultural lands at risk of conversion and helps sequester emissions.
Perrine said the land trust and property owners look forward to partnering with the city on sustaining Chico as an agriculturally productive community and on potential flood-retention and green infrastructure projects.
No formal council action was required; the matter was presented as public comment to inform the council of the conservation milestone.
