Assistant Superintendent Dr. Castro told trustees the ABC Summer Professional Learning Institute drew strong participation and helped kick off the district's year of professional development. "Total number of registrations, I've mentioned this already, 844," Dr. Castro said, adding that roughly 210 workshops were offered across two days and the theme was "Spark." The event included two keynote speakers (Dr. Candice Singh and Dr. Gina Zeatlo) and sessions on the Science of Reading, interdisciplinary learning for English learners, CTE topics, and classroom AI tools.
Dr. Castro said the event was funded through the district's Local Control Accountability Plan and that staff used the Cvent event app to publish schedules, session lists and maps for teachers. The district plans post-event surveys and a midyear symposium in January to sustain the professional learning and provide follow-up support tied to district LCAP goals.
Board members congratulated staff and asked practical questions about parking, catering and how teachers would access vetted instructional apps. Dr. Castro said the strongest immediate feedback was parking; the district coordinated with the city of Cerritos and provided field and lot parking options and carpool guidance. She also said the IT department has circulated vetted tools and instructions for teachers and that follow-up data review will guide next steps.
Trustees said they want to ensure the institute's lessons thread into year-long supports. The district emphasized that the institute is a kickoff to ongoing professional development aligned with LCAP goals.
