Board previews Measure S projects: playground modernizations, Seahawk Bowl repairs and modular classrooms

District leaders presented architectural renderings and project concepts for the Measure S bond program, giving the public an early look at playground modernization, Seahawk Bowl repairs, turf replacement and modular classroom plans.
Superintendent Nicole Wesley highlighted student-driven design elements for new elementary playgrounds and said the district is piloting Earthscape equipment for a differentiated, consumable-based play experience. Deputy Superintendent Annette Alpern outlined site-specific modular solutions for aging portables at Madison, Lincoln and Jefferson elementary schools, describing Gen 7 prefab classrooms as permanent modular buildings that can be installed faster than new construction and customized for TK/K needs (including added restrooms and tricycle pathways).
At the high school, the board previewed Seahawk Bowl work slated for this summer: concrete and seating repairs, replacement of upper concourse restrooms and phased upgrades timed around the athletic season. The district also showed conceptual designs for a new innovation and design building (conversion of the former Diamond Street "bingo room"), noting schematics could change when final budget numbers arrive. Alpern said DSA review and approvals will drive the schedule; demolition for the innovation building is tentatively planned for 2027 pending DSA approval and final budgets.
The presentation included turf replacement options and a proposed vendor (discussed as TenCate); some board members cautioned about darker turf colors because of heat retention. Wesley and Alpern said the architects will return with cost estimates and refined schematics, and the board asked staff to email the full designs and budget estimates to members for review.
No final project approvals were requested at the meeting; staff said a series of summer construction proposals and warrant approvals will return to the board in subsequent meetings.
