KJ said the facility serves about 140 residents—many with mental-health and substance-use histories—and noted a growing share of residents are older adults on limited SSI. “The biggest problem is they are under really a small amount of [income]; SSI won’t cover assisted living,” she said, explaining the program’s reliance on social activities, food donations and community partnerships.
The organization requested roughly $40,000 in CDBG funding, which the chair noted would be used mainly for staff salary. Committee members asked about a new management company’s policies on surveillance cameras; KJ said management ‘‘let us slide’’ on camera rules as long as residents do not complain. Members also pressed for proof of program continuity, licensing and use of funds; staff indicated they will follow up on documentation and intake forms if the nonprofit receives funding.
The presentation emphasized direct service to a vulnerable population and current pressures from inflation, reduced CalFresh benefits and rising rents. Committee members thanked Care Housing for its work and asked staff to confirm any outstanding compliance or reporting documents before funding recommendations.
The committee did not decide funding at the March meeting; staff will include this request in the May allocation deliberations.
