The City of La Palma’s council unanimously elected Councilmember Nitesh Patel as mayor and selected Councilmember Debbie Baker as mayor pro tem during a year-end reorganization meeting.
The move came after nominations and roll-call votes conducted at the start of the meeting. The clerk announced, “Motion passes unanimously with 5 yes, no objections,” after the vote to elect Patel.
The change in leadership takes effect immediately, with the council following by filling a series of appointments to regional agencies and internal subcommittees. The council confirmed Nitesh Patel as the city’s representative to the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority (with Mark Waldman listed as alternate) and adopted a resolution approving Patel as the city’s representative to the Orange County Fire Authority by unanimous vote. The council also re‑affirmed Mayor Pro Tem Debbie Baker as the city’s representative to the Southern California Association of Governments General Assembly by default, and kept other external appointments in place per the staff report.
One contested appointment was the Orange County Vector Control District seat: Councilmember Vikesh Patel was elected by roll call with four votes in favor and one opposing vote. For items that were uncontested the council used a single motion to approve the remainder of external and internal committee assignments; the collective motion passed on a unanimous roll call.
Why it matters: leadership and external appointments determine who represents La Palma on regional boards that influence countywide public safety, sanitation and vector control policy. Those representatives also shape grant, budget and intergovernmental coordination on behalf of the city.
The meeting included brief ceremonial presentations to outgoing Mayor Mark Waldman and remarks from a representative of Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk Silva’s office. The council took no further legislative action on the appointments at that meeting; staff will process the adopted resolution(s) and update regional bodies as required.
