Summary
Staff reported progress on USA 2 50 planning and outreach, a community "freedom quilt" at Grijalva Park, and separate planning and fundraising subcommittees; commissioners launched a $35,000 sponsorship drive for a July 3 Hart Park celebration and encouraged each commissioner to solicit $2,500.
Commission staff told the Park Planning & Community Events Commission that work is underway to mark the nation's 250th anniversary in the City of Orange and that two distinct subcommittees — one for broader planning and one for fundraising for the park celebration — are operating.
Emily Bustamante summarized the planning subcommittee's work: a USA 2 50 resource website and calendar of events, a library exhibit of historic markers and a replica Liberty Bell, and an 11-by-6-foot community "freedom quilt" displayed at Grijalva Park for residents to add squares. "As more events and activities are confirmed, we'll be sure to continue to update the USA 2 50 calendar now through the end of the year," Bustamante said.
Staff clarified that a separate fundraising subcommittee handles sponsorships for the July 3 "Celebration in the Park" at Hart Park. Commissioners reported contacting about 100 potential sponsors and have received several verbal commitments but are still awaiting funds to reach a stated goal of $35,000. Chair Tara Romero challenged commissioners to consider raising $2,500 each to help meet the target.
The commission discussed whether the fundraising subcommittee's scope had shifted to include planning; staff advised that material changes to subcommittee scope would need to be agendized under the Brown Act and that staff would provide written clarification by email ahead of the next meeting.
Next steps: staff will continue to update the USA 2 50 calendar, report fundraising progress, and provide written clarification on subcommittee scopes; the July 3 event remains planned pending sponsorship funding.
