On Jan. 13 the Irvine City Council approved proclamations recognizing Jan. 13, 2026 as Korean American Day and Jan. 19, 2026 as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Former mayor Suki Kang and other community representatives attended and thanked the council for the recognition; Jason Garshfield addressed the council in support of the MLK proclamation.
Later the council received the Irvine Barclay Theatre's annual report. Craig Springer, president of the Barclay, described the theater as a public-private partnership among the city, UC Irvine and an operating nonprofit, and said the venue has an approximate annual budget of $8,000,000 and that city operating support enables discounted community rentals and programmatic access. "This highly successful partnership has endured for 40 years because it has consistently delivered real value to the community," Springer said.
Springer highlighted community programs including 12 community-use days, a community-access ticket program that provides up to 2,000 complimentary tickets annually, and a partnership that has allowed the Barclay to offer thousands of free or discounted tickets to veterans and first responders. He also presented conceptual drawings for possible backstage and amenity expansions and said the board is excited about future possibilities.
The council moved to "receive and file" the Barclay's annual report; the motion carried on voice/roll call as part of the related agenda actions.
