Community commenters back school greening project and raise concerns about new mariachi program

Two public commenters addressed the board during public comment on Jan. 9.
Jesse Salazar, who identified himself as the founder of a nonprofit that works on school greening, said his group had "greened over 40 LAUSD schools" and announced that the organization had applied for and received funding to green 10 Lynwood schools. Salazar described plans to design projects with community input and said the work could include planting trees and creating rain gardens at district campuses; he thanked the board and superintendent for the opportunity.
Eva Helena Cruz thanked the district for introducing a mariachi program and said she had reviewed the memorandum of understanding for the class, which the program expects will serve about 100 students. Cruz urged the district to follow the MOU closely, to ensure students would not be asked to buy instruments or wait extended periods to receive them, and to appoint a qualified district staff member to support students with Individualized Education Programs. "I recommend that we strictly adhere to the MOU and ensure that no changes are made without proper communication and consideration," she said.
The board acknowledged both comments; no formal action on either item was taken at the meeting. Staff and the superintendent indicated they would note the concerns for follow-up with the appropriate departments.
