Commission approves 3-hour daytime parking near 1249 East Catella Avenue to reflect changed land use

The City Traffic Commission approved a change to curb parking on the north side of Catella Avenue adjacent to 1249 East Catella Avenue, converting an existing 20-minute limit to a 3-hour time-limited parking restriction effective 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Staff explained the 20-minute limit dated to the site’s prior use as a bank and that the property’s conversion to senior housing makes a longer visitor interval ‘‘more compatible with the needs of visitors and family members.’’ Staff noted the 1200 East block primarily supports commercial uses with on-site parking for customers; the proposed 3-hour restriction would not be exclusive to one property and would benefit nearby businesses as well. Implementation requires approval of Resolution TC01-226.
A commissioner asked whether staff had performed safety research on longer permitted stays and whether changing the interval might create safety concerns in that section of Catella. Staff responded that the curb has seen several configurations historically (unrestricted, 20-minute) and that the recommended 3-hour limit is better aligned with present land use; no incidents linked to previous configurations were reported in the staff remarks.
The commission moved, seconded and approved the proposal unanimously. The action was recorded as approved and will follow the normal process (resolution adoption) to put new signs and enforcement into effect.
