Project staff presented the Third Ward Legacy Tour—an app-based, map-driven tour of neighborhood sites and stories—and said the team hopes to launch the project on July 4.
"We are just about done this project and we wanna try to kick it off on the July 4," said Danny Lynam, the project team leader, noting the team received a mini-grant from America250 MI and has identified 50 stops for the tour, with a few sites still being finalized where ward boundaries overlap.
The app demonstration by Steven and Taylor showed a map of tour stops, stop-level pages with videos, photos, quizzes and space for reflection, and options to view neighborhoods such as the Jefferson Street corridor or Wealthy Street corridor. The team also displayed mockups of yellow aluminum QR-code placards designed to withstand weather; scanning a placard will open information about that stop and provide links to neighborhood listings and businesses.
The project includes a mural component: Asante Kane said the RFP for the mural portion is complete and staff will bring a recommendation for the mural facilitator. The demo also included recorded oral-history excerpts—narrators recounted local incidents and people, including a mid‑20th-century account about school integration and material about Ed Rasberry and the Grand Rapids Black Sox—which the team said will be part of the tour’s historic content.
Project staff said the app will be accessible via phone, tablet, kiosks and an online portal and that they will continue to finalize site boundaries and stakeholder outreach ahead of the planned July 4 activation.
