Rob Wright, director of the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School, told the Middlesex school board that the program provides dual‑enrollment coursework, immersive field studies and a senior research sequence; a CBGS senior, Caitlin Hargrove, described the experience as formative and college‑preparatory.
Rob Wright, director of the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School, presented an overview of the program to the Middlesex County School Board, emphasizing dual‑enrollment coursework, intensive field studies and a senior research sequence that culminates in student presentations.
Wright said CBGS serves students from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula at three sites and that Middlesex County Public Schools acts as the fiscal agent. “By the numbers, we have 14 participating school divisions across three sites... Students graduate with about 51 college credits,” Wright said, and he added that approximately 20 Middlesex students currently attend the program.
Wright described the program’s immersive field‑study model — tenth‑grade fieldwork beginning in the watershed and extending in later years to estuaries and the Outer Banks — and said seniors conduct original research projects and present at a regional symposium. He said field experiences are structured as classwork rather than optional field trips.
Caitlin Hargrove, introduced as a CBGS senior, spoke afterward about her experience: “CBGS has taught me simple skills like how to properly study, to ways to design my own research project and present my findings,” she said, and she credited overnight field studies and the program’s research sequence for strengthening her college readiness.
Board members thanked Wright and Hargrove and asked a few clarifying questions about enrollment and the program’s partnership with Middlesex. No board action was required on the presentation.
