Board approves change order 12 for Milpitas High performing-arts center; construction manager says January ribbon-cutting remains on track

Travis Kirk, representing construction management, said the change order includes a small tariff-related charge for metal panels, additional work triggered by PG&E coordination, and the electrical run necessary for a fire pump above the theater stage. He described one instance where contractor labor estimates were reduced after moving from a flat-rate estimate to time-and-material tracking, saying that saved labor hours and costs.
Kirk reported the project is currently trending at 7.08% in change-order costs but characterized that as favorable compared with other lease-leaseback projects he has seen. Trustees asked about schedule and student occupancy; Kirk said the team remains on track for January and that student move-in for the second semester is probable but a site-level decision would be made by school leadership.
A trustee requested that students be among the first to use the facility; the board deferred the final decision about external rentals to the chief innovator and superintendent. The motion to approve the change order was made, seconded and carried by voice vote.
