Summary
The board approved a lease to provide Apple devices for grades 7–12, with administration saying payments will be about $277,000 per year for four years and initial deliveries already underway.
The school board voted to approve a multi-year lease with Apple to provide student devices for grades 7–12.
Mr. Hoon, who presented the proposal, told the board, "The payments can be approximately $277,000 a year for the next 4 years," and asked for the board’s approval. The motion to approve the lease was moved, seconded and carried with board members responding "aye."
Mr. Thompson, who addressed the technology side of the purchase, said the district had 1,945 devices delivered the afternoon of the meeting and expected another roughly 185 to arrive during the week. "I do have one with me," he said, offering board members a chance to view the device after the meeting.
Administrators said the devices are intended to better prepare students for college and careers compared with previously used iPads, and that the leased machines are a lighter-weight MacBook-style product the district judged a better fit for grades 7–12. Funding for the lease will be included in the district’s payment schedule when devices are delivered, per the administration.
The board did not record a roll-call vote in the transcript; the motion passed by voice vote.
